The National Safety Council estimated that the number of obsolete computers in
the United States will reach 315 million in 2004. Yet, this same study found
that only about 11% of obsolete equipment is recycled. 80% of all American
trash and waste is land-filled. Plastics and computer-related scrap decompose
daily in landfills while contaminating our ground and water. Nearly 200 million
tons of waste is land-filled each year! If only 1% of the above number is
electronics, it will result in the land-filling of:
- 160,000 tons of leaded glass (8%)
- 1,150,000 tons of ferrous metals (57.5%)
- 472,000 tons of non-ferrous metals (23.8%)
- 120,000 tons of precious metals (6%)
- 88,000 tons of mixed plastic (4.4%)
- 6,000 tons of hazardous waste (.3%)
